Work out a price from the size of a piece or the time and materials in it, then see what a buyer pays and what you keep once a gallery's commission and GST are counted.

Good to know

Price by size, consistently

A rate per square centimetre or inch keeps a small piece and a large one in proportion, so collectors can see your prices make sense. Raise the rate as your work sells, not piece by piece.

Commission comes off the price without GST

NAVA's Code of Practice puts commercial galleries at 40–50%, regional galleries at 25–33% and artist-run spaces at 10–30%, taken from the price before GST. Agree it in writing.

Same price everywhere

Ask the same price in your studio as the gallery does. Undercutting a gallery that shows your work is the quickest way to lose it.
