This painting explores the remarkable architecture of a fully opened rose. By moving in close, the composition reveals the graceful rhythm of overlapping petals, the warmth of the flower's centre and the constantly shifting play of light across its surface. Every subtle colour change contributes to the illusion of purity, creating a work that invites quiet observation rather than immediate attention.
The garden surrounding my studio is filled with flowers of every colour, yet over time it is the white blooms that have become a constant source of inspiration. Gardenias, camellias, roses and delicate dianthus flower through much of the year, bringing a quiet elegance that changes with every passing hour as the light moves across the garden. White flowers have always fascinated me because they present one of painting's greatest challenges. Although we think of them simply as white, they are anything but. Soft morning light introduces delicate blues and violets, surrounding foliage reflects subtle greens, while warm sunlight creates gentle creams and golden highlights. The artist's task is not to paint white, but to paint the colours that allow our eyes to believe the flower is white. Like my ceramic work, this painting reflects a lifelong fascination with botanical forms and careful craftsmanship. Whether working in acrylic, watercolour or porcelain, I am continually drawn to the quiet beauty found in nature and to capturing those fleeting moments that encourage us to slow down and look more closely.
